All The Best Reykjavik Bakeries & Coffee Shops

Best Coffee Shops in Reykjavik

Mokka Kaffi

Located on the rainbow road, Mokka Kaffi is the perfect spot to grab a cup of coffee and relax. Known for its cozy atmosphere with warm wooden accents and comfortable seating, you’ll see plenty of locals chatting over a latte or reading a magazine. You can also get coffee to go, if you just need a quick caffeine boost while exploring downtown. The espresso leans towards a dark, Italian style roast, but great quality nonetheless.

Kattakaffihúsið

One of the most iconic cafes in Reykjavik is Kattakaffihúsið, otherwise known as the cat cafe! In case you didn’t already know, Reykjavik has a long history of loving & supporting cats. Cats most likely arrived in Iceland back in the Viking area, and have been cohabiting with humans ever since. Dogs were banned in cities until the 1980s, so Reykjavik locals primarily had cats as pets.

I absolutely love cats, so visiting Reykjavik's cat cafe was a no brainer for me. It is super cute & feminine, with pale pink walls, sparkling chandeliers and feline-inspired collage art. Most of the time, there are between 4-6 cats living in the cafe. Visitors are required to order something in order to stay, and then you can pet and snuggle with the cats inside. Please always follow the directions of the employees and be respectful of the cats.

Plantan Kaffihús

For those seeking plant-based delights, Plantan Kaffihús is a hidden gem in Reykjavik. This charming neighborhood café specializes in vegan and vegetarian cuisine. The bright, inviting ambiance is complemented by friendly staff and an array of colorful dishes that are as Instagrammable as they are delicious. Plantan Kaffihús is proof that Iceland is a paradise not just for nature enthusiasts but for mindful eaters too.

Reykjavik Roasters

Considered one of the finest coffee shops in Iceland, Reykjavik Roasters is a haven for coffee lovers. Known for its in-house roasting, this café delivers an authentic and aromatic experience with every cup. This is probably my favorite espresso in Reykjavik. The cozy, minimalist interior, adorned with second hand vintage furniture, creates a perfect space to relax. Popular with locals and visitors alike, Reykjavik Roasters is just steps away from Hallgrimskirkja so you can get your caffeine kick before see one of Reykjavik’s tourist highlights.

Kaktus Espresso Bar

Slightly off the beaten path, Kaktus Espresso Bar feels like a neighborhood secret – right in the heart of Reykjavik. There is a super cozy vibe, full of locals chatting and working on laptops. Espresso is Italian style with a super dark roast, which is not my preference. But it is hard to deny that the quality is good. Plus, the vibes are so cute!

Best Bakeries in Reykjavik

Baka Baka

No joke, I ate the BEST ham & cheese croissant of my life at Baka Baka. In Reykjavik of all places! And now I need to come back to this bakery on every single work trip to Iceland. It is just that good! Baka Baka is a beloved artisanal bakery celebrated for its handcrafted breads and pastries, ranging from traditional to creative. This cozy spot has the option to dine in or take away. Plus, it transitions to a pizza joint in the evening. Don't miss their delightful cinnamon rolls and seasonal baked treats! Their coffee is great too.

Brauð & Co

The brightly painted exterior of Braud & Co is a Reykjavik landmark – and the delicious pastries inside are equally as beloved. This trendy bakery and cafe is located steps away from the Hallgrímskirkja church. Specializing in sourdough breads, everything in the clear glass case will entice you. I asked the employee what her favorite item was, and she said the cardamom bun, so I ordered that, along with a croissant and a cinnamon bun (I didn’t skimp out). Honestly, everything was delicious! The texture of the breads is really what shines with large sourdough bubbles and flaky pastry dough.

Deig Bakery

Specializing in vegan baked goods and indulgent creations, Deig is a cool spot. It has a very punk rock vibe, similar to its sister business Le Kock (which just so happens to be one of my favorite eateries in Reykjavik). The menu offers a variety of bagel sandwiches, as well as bagel with schmear. I am particularly obsessed with the caper cream cheese. Why is this the first time I’ve ever seen that before?? Additionally, there is a rotating assortment of donuts and pastries in their case.

Sandholt

Everything about Sandholt is perfection. The aesthetic. The pastries. The vibes. I love it all. This family run bakery is in its 4th generation of artisanal baking, and the experience shows! Offering a wide range of patisserie items, breads and pastries, I can just about guarantee you will find an item (or 5) that you want to eat from Sandholt. I particularly like their savory items, such as the toad-in-a-hole breakfast croissant or their smoked salmon sandwich. Dine-in or take away options are available. They also happen to have fantastic espresso. The ambiance is impeccable.

Best Breakfast in Reykjavik

Wake & Bake Cafe

This cozy cafe is a nice spot for a coffee, but bagel sandwiches are the thing here. Their friendly staff can give you recommendations, or you can select from their set menu of bagel sandwiches. Look, these bagels aren't going to change your life, but they're not bad. I would recommend getting one of their bagel sandwiches to go, especially if you are doing a day trip from Reykjavik. It's easy to eat on the go.

Laundromat Cafe

I love the look of Laundromat Cafe. This vibrant spot features a colorful, retro design including vintage maps on nearly every wall, a book shelf wrapped bar, and American diner style seats. It hits you with nostalgia as soon as you walked in. Pitching itself as the best brunch in Reykjavik, this eatery features all day breakfast with American staples like buttermilk pancakes and omelets. It's an excellent choice for families, thanks to its play corner for kids. I find the prices are really reasonable (for Reykjavik) and the friendly staff make you feel comfortable leisurely hanging out.
